Our Volunteers

I wanted to be a part of something that helps Central American asylum seekers and is about people helping people. Being a part of We Are Them is a way to give back (hopefully, in part) what my great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother gave me.

Web Designer & Developer

I moved to the US 10 years ago after dreaming about it when I was a kid. I saw this country as the land of opportunity, a place where all of my dreams would come true. After a couple of years living here, I realized that I wanted to help others realize their dreams as well.

I volunteered to work on this website and campaign because I believe that the way this country was created was to offer opportunities to everyone, no matter who they were, where they were from, or who they loved. I have donated money to charities before but designing and building this website felt like a concrete step into helping people.

I moved to the USA from London nearly 5 years ago and while it was a challenge to navigate the system, I was in an incredibly privileged position. I chose to be a part of this campaign to lend support where I can to individuals and families who face unjust discrimination daily and to remind others that our differences will never be more than our similarities.

Watching the xenophobic backlash against people coming here from Central/South America has been enraging for me, and I wanted to take action in a way that can help change the narrative. America is a nation made up of immigrants; my great-grandparents came over through Ellis Island from Ireland and Italy and faced their own hardships and prejudices. We need to stop looking at the newest entrants into our country with suspicion, treating them as “other” - after all, though it may be a couple of generations back for some of us, “we are them.”
